Take back our Hut
Date: Tue, 3 Oct 2000 01:10:01 -0400Wow what a great site! I am a delivery driver for a Tricon Delco unit in central Georgia. I've been delivering pizza since 1987. I've worked for 'em all, started with mom and pop, then Hut back in the old days when we actually made the dough, then around all the major chains and some minor ones too, including PJ's and now am back to Hut after having it out with a lying sack of a manager at PJ's. While all of the weenies above store level are hard to make come off a dime no matter who you work for, Pizza Hut is by far the worst. Pizza Hut still believes .10 an hour is a raise, not an insult. Pizza Hut still believes that .50 a run is adequate compensation for a delivery. Does anyone with a family buy Tricon's insurance and still have a paycheck?
Pizza Hut is still formulating policy from the top down. Policy written by people who do not take orders, make pizzas, or deliver food. While gas prices down here in Dixie aren't as bad as the rest of ya'll are paying. it isn't getting any cheaper, nor is a raise in the delivery charge forthcoming. While Tricon's second quarter earnings were up 26%, did any of it trickle down to you other employees, or did you just get trickled on like we did? Is there some ominous dark reason why Tricon's website provides no forum for employees and clearly states that suggestions are not solicited, nor will any attention be given to them? All the while these dictators at the corporate office promote their so-called diverstity and commitment to teamwork. Yeah, right! It's my team, you do the work!
And we get screwed non-stop.
What I propose people, is that we take this company from them.
I want to hear some support out there for a Union of Pizza Hut employees. Tricon is a Fortune 200 company. And that is only Half of Pizza Hut. But it's the half that counts, since they license all the francises and oversee them. People it's time all disgruntled Pizza Hut employees put up or shut up. It's our company, and if we get together on this, we can buy it up one share at a time. What I propose is that we figure out how to buy the company stock collectively, reinvest the dividends, and keep on doing it until the employees own it, or at least have the leverage to make it work right. That way, when the bean-counters are groping for the bottom line, it'll be OUR bottom line they are trying to improve.
I would love to recieve e-mail from anyone who might be willing to help, organize, or otherwise devote time to taking Pizza Hut from the Yuppies who are running it so poorly.
Please send e-mail to: a4ceof1@hotmail.com
P.S.
If any of this makes it's way back to someone in Tricon who's sure to blow a fuse, go ahead, fire me. I won't lack for work, but you will always be hiring drivers. And this driver grabs the newspaper in the driveway, catches the dog before he gets away, and always has a few extra packets of parmesean in the car. If you don't understand that, ask your customers. I'll even make it easy to ID me. My car is the one with the sticker that says: WARNING: Driver only carries $20.00 worth of AMMO.

Date: Sun, 06 Aug 2000 21:21:01 +0000My friends, I am so glad I work for Papa Johns Pizza. I use to work for Pizza hut, and I hated it. You could not laugh or have any fun at all on the job, and you guys know as well as I do that in this rat race business we all need to laugh at work. Its one of the most stressful jobs out there. We have a lot of fun at my store, Papa Johns. We get the job done, survive the rush( and that is the nature of the game) and do our best to satisfy the customers. What the hell is wrong with these people? They work their people like dogs, no raises, no bonuses for the lower crew, no sick leave, etc........And they expect you to stay loyal , ha.I have been there, I worked at Domino's Pizzas as well, its the business, they have lost sight of the little people that have made them rich. I work full time and go to college, that is my ticket out of this business. I say this as a commrad, we may work for different Pizza companies but we are all brothers and sisters in this hell. Hang in, come on over to Papa Johns. Its not a perfect company but I belive its better than what you have.
Signed a friend in the business in Virginia.

NPC sucks
Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 18:44:16 EDTHey people,
I was looking at your site and I had to bitch too, sorry I couldn't help it. NPC sucks!! They are only concerned with money and they don't care who they have to shit on to make it. I am an assistant manager who goes to college full time also. When NPC took over the Pizza Hut market, a representative from their company (who was supposed to come in and show us all the "glorious" things about NPC) assured me that assistants only had to work about 45 hours per week. I thought this would be fine--until my AGM began to bitch at me every week for not working 50+ hours a week. I told him that I go to school full time and I would get plenty of hours during the summer. He said they didn't care and that I HAD to work all these hours to keep HIS supervisor off his back. Also, the BIG guys in the company keep saying that we are losing money and not making as much as we did last year, etc. They always fail to realize that this time last year the Big New Yorker was in its freshman stint and it was boosting OUR sales out the ass. And "HELLO??!!", when was the last time we had a special worth mentioning. You can't hope to boost sales by revamping the friggin' EDGE pizza. Its the worst quality pizza we have. If the customer does not receive the pizza within 5 minutes of it coming out of the oven, its hopeless. I think that NPC needs to get its head out of its ass and come up with a good promotion. If you want to boost your ever-loving sales, you have to do something different, fresh, and exciting. And I'm not talkin' about giving customers a chance to order a free CD that they make themselves from a website that SUCKS!! Hopefully, soon I will graduate from college and tell NPC to "Kiss my ass!! I have something NEW to do on Friday nights---BESIDES bust my ass on the cut-table for a company that doesn't give a shit."
Pissed Off and tired of customers and the pizza business!!

My Story
Date: Mon, 8 May 2000 16:45:42 -0700 (PDT)
Dear Wyldshot,I have been checking out your site for the past year. I have read the horror stories and felt the anger that has made its way towards my heart. You see, I was once a PH Shift Supervisor.
I stared out as a waiter in our town's best Pizza Hut; clean, friendly, good food, excellent tips, and a good following of regular customers. We were very fortunate that we had an experienced and good manager. He tended to panic, but that was his ONLY drawback, and his heart was in the right place. You see, before Pizza Hut, I was a hotel food and beverage manager who just burned out on the hours and the pay. I just wanted to wait tables again. My joy at being an employee showed and I received the benefit of that in my tips and customer satisfaction.
I met my wife at a party thrown by PH employees and if not for PH, my life would be a bit lonelier.
When I got married, I decided (after turning it down three times)to actively seek promotion. I ran the gauntlet through service, dough, driving, and production. The crew was really pro-team and most of us were very friendly to each other. It wasn't perfect and there was alot of hard work, but considering where I lived, life couldn't have gotten much better. But, a dark and gloomy day approached when the Area Coach (Let's call him Phil Bigguns) decided to transfer me to the worst PH in the city in the worst part of town. Apparently the turn-over rate of shift supervisors was high. Other shift supervisors that worked in that store warned me with ALL earnestly to run! At the time, I shrugged it off and said if things were that bad, then perhaps I could help improve them. I decided to start with a good attitude and do my best.
Needless to say, I was shocked. The kitchen was horrible, the crew wasn't in uniform half the time, the dining room was trashed, the register was from 15 years ago, and a strong odor of urine was apparent by the back door (I later found out that homeless and drunks enjoyed the dumpster as a latrine). I felt extremely out of place; I was the only white in an almost totally Hispanic area. I've lived in the south before and I've seen the glare that some hateful whites give African-Americans; I didn't truly understand that look until that moment I walked into that PH to meet the crew.
I gritted my teeth and vowed to do the best that I could. I'm not saying, at this point, that I'm a model employee much less a model supervisor, but dammit I worked and worked hard. My thinking was, if I worked hard, then therefore my employees would work just as hard if not harder. D'oh!
I don't want to count the times I've had to send everyone home after I called in the numbers and made the bank drop to come back and finish up the work that should have been done during the shift.
It's rather difficult to run a restaurant on a Thursday with a driver, myself, and a waitress. To make matters worse, our area had THREE TIMES the amount of complaints and demands for credit and free food than any other PH in the city! People learn quickly that the squeaky wheel gets the greese.
It was my misfortune to have the only other shift supervisor be an 18 year old girl who, I swear, was one of the emotionally unstable people I've ever met. She had such LOW self esteem that she went out of her way to be friends with everyone. That also included two managers at two other restaurants whom she like to 'trade out' food with(after she left PH, those two managers were fired for those trade-outs).
So, her new thing was, teach me how to 'fit in'. That included the food trade outs, her boy-friend (who was a former PH supervisor at that very store), how to use 'creative accounting' to fix shortages, and how to have a great time during COMPANY time.
When that didn't work, she got hostile. For her, it turned into 'us' against the new supervisor. It got very ugly. It got so bad, that even after talking with the store manager, he said he was helpless, since the 18 year old girl was a 'favorite' of Mr. Phil Bigguns.
I thought life at work was Hell at that point, but I still did my best. I even did quite a bit of word processing for a new training program that was going to be used in our area (a project I might add, that I didn't get totally paid for since the time on that had to come out of my store manager's budget). And low and behold....my wife and I are going to have a baby! I was really excited, but knew that we needed to save up, so I took a dishwashing job at another restaurant in the morning and worked PH at night. This lasted for about nine weeks. I often came home from PH, showered, got dressed in my other uniform, and took a 4 hour nap.
About week 7 of the two job routine, I finally had my fill of the 18 year old shift supervisor, who still needed her boyfriend to help her do her paperwork and close the restaurant at night. I wrote a very detailed letter explaining to Mr. Phil Bigguns, about everything she was and wasn't doing. Needless to say, I certainly got his attention. I found out the next day from two other employees that the 18 year old bubble head was BEGGING everyone to write down EVERYTHING I have ever done wrong. My manager was not aware of any of this until the next day. He was informed that a waitress (Let's call her Tira)had went of her own free will to Mr. I-AM-THE-AREA-SUPERVISOR-HOW-DARE-YOU-SAY-I'M-WRONG Phil Bigguns and accused me of sexual harassment. Maybe I'm a little slow, but isn't the timing a little strange? Especially for an alleged incident that happened three months prior??? And to make matters worse Tira and the 18 year old shift supervisor (I don't even give her a name, she's not worth the waste of oxygen that she uses up when she inhales) are very, VERY good pals.
So, we go through the whole routine of me being interrogated by Mr. Phil Bigguns with my manager present. The next day, I get interrogated again with Tira present. She backs down, since she knows it's crap. Oh, Mr. Phil Bigguns, what about my letter? The problems here? Your blind eye to it? Well....He basically blows me off and tells my manager that we need to 'work' things out. He leaves...satisfied that thanks to Tira and the 18 year old shift supervisor that the original issue is clouded enough to NO LONGER BE RELEVANT. I believe, in my heart of hearts, even to this day, that was what he, Mr. Phil Bigguns, had in mind.
The only point that I got in trouble for was taking a smoke break while still on the clock. Of course, mind you, I'm a moderate smoker, and since I'm a shift supervisor I cannot take an off-the-clock break, especially when I'm the person in charge on a 12 hour or 10 hour shift. Did I mention that Mr. Phil Bigguns is a certified former-smoker current anti-smoking nazi?
Anyway, I tiredly tried again, and things were rather quiet for the next two weeks while my wife was enjoying being pregnant and I was working both jobs. We even were able to get a sonogram done.
Through all this mess that I went through, I tried to hide my upset from my wife, but it didn't pan out. She sense that I was stressing horribly and it hurt her. On a Monday night when I was closing the restaurant, my wife came in, sat at a booth and passed out. She was bleeding and I went ballistic.
I had to take her to the emergency room and I waited for five hours. She had miscarried; our child lost. The doctor told us that it might have been stress induced. That morning, I decided to drop the dishwashing job and I went into PH to work. Better the devil I know than the devil I don't.
The 18 year old shift twit finally quit. Mr. Phil Bigguns didn't even let her finish her two weeks; I think he came to see what kind of person he had been dealing with. DUMBASS.
I was able to work for PH for about another 7 months before I really got sick of it. My unit manager talks out of both sides of his mouth and out of his ass all at the same time. Mr. Slick. Tira is to this day, still employed at that PH. Pizza Hut made me realize I would never be happy until I own my own restaurant. And I vow before GOD and man, I will NEVER abuse my employees like that. I left the restaurant business and have been doing much better in the 'real' business world than I thought I could. More money, friendlier work environment, and alot of upward mobility.
Everyone that knows all what happened have all told me that I would have a strong case in court against those people, since especially, my wife and I found out that because of the miscarriage...we cannot have children now....not of our own. This is the closest I'll ever get and the best way to combat petty, cowardly, and malicious people; with the truth. By the way, this isn't a NPC or PHI owned franchise and I dearly hope that Tira, the 18 year old FORMER shift supervisor, Mr. Slick-Store GM, and Mr. Phil Bigguns read this and feel just the slightest twinge of guilt. If they do, they will know who I am and what I'm talking about.
:-)
<Wyldshot if you need to cut this down to size, feel free. I hope not though. It's taken me this long to summon up the courage to write this letter. Please, don't advertise my E-Mail address. Thanks for lending an ear.>
(Note: I wouldn't think of cutting it down! :-) - WyldShot)

NPC Horror Stories
Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2000 08:22:12 -0500
First of all I would like to thank you for the wonderful site. I have a story of my own...After agreeing to take over one of NPC's "struggling" stores in Northwest Arkansas, my daughter was born. I knew that being a manager for Pizza Hut in general would be very time consuming, but the AGM agreed to at least wait until she was a month old before I would take it over, that way we (my wife and I) could get adjusted before the drastic change (even more than raising a child, after looking back on the whole situation). So, I took over and for 6 months everything was great, I was working 60-75 hours a week, employees were as happy as they wanted to be, sales were increasing, I was receiving bonuses, my store was getting a remodel, it was all good. I was doing with only shift managers, my AGM wouldn't allow me to have an assistant manager, because the store sales didn't allow that kind of labor expense in the beginning, so after 6 months I asked for an assistant. And then, it was like, all of a sudden, my AGM forgot everything that was going on in my store. Nothing was right, sales weren't high enough (they had gone from $4500 a week to $8500 a week in less than 2 months), my employees were "way too lazy". So, after fighting on the phone (he was "at other stores (home)" every time I tried to call for about 2 or 3 days, he agreed to get me one. So, cool, and assistant manager. The lady e-mailed me her available schedule, you wouldn't believe it, 8:30-5 M-F!!!! No lie! That was the ONLY schedule she was going to work! And when I asked the AGM about it he said, "Well, you don't spend enough time at work, you spend too much time with your family, and you only need to spend an hour a day with your family, that will be sufficient." WOW! So, I let the A(absolutely) G(ay) M(utherf**ker) finish what he had to say. And then I replied, "You can come get these keys, they are on the desk." He says, "is this your two weeks?" I said, "No, it's my two seconds." His best response to keep me there was, "That's real classy of you!" So, I just said, "Class begets class, see ya," and hung up the phone. I later learned on that particular day he was moving an oven from another store and dropped part of the oven on his foot and broke it. Man that sucks. Oh, and there were about $300 worth of deliveries needing to be made and delivered, my driver (the only other employee working at the time) walked out with me. No one was in the store for about 45 minutes. Man that really sucks.
Thank you for reading fellow abuse victim

Long term employees get no respect.
Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2000 23:34:45 -0600
It is good to see I am not the only one with a grevience. I have work for Pizza Hut for 14 years and finnally I took that step and seeked employment with the PJ America "PAPA JOHN'S". And let me tell you I have never in the time I have spent with 2 franchise's and PHI have I ever felt so good.
The pay is unbelieveable at what you start at, compared to working al those years at pizza hut.
I left pizza hut making What they call the minimum they pay managers at $442.00 a week to making $475.00 a week as a MIT. They train their people extremely well, they do not leave it up to the managers to do so. Everyone attends training classes and are taught by a PJ America certified trainer.
If you ask me the grass is difinitely greener on the other side, not to mention how easy the job is. I never thought it could actua;;y be this easy working in a pizza place. I just love it.
Now, for the reason I left the hut. I got alittle tired of my AGM hiring in unexpirenced GM's maiking a hell of alot more money than the ones that have been their forever. She was hiring them in at $600.00 a week. Now is that crazy are what. I was wandering if I should have quiot and then came back in oreder to make the money I deserved. I was well worth more than what they were paying me. I always did my job well, always scored the highest over the area on a PHI franchise inspections, scored 93% and above.
What did I get ? A $150.00 bonus, a npc ink pen, and a 110% shirt pen from Bruce -------. I don't want to say his who name, but I am sur you know who I am talking about, you know the one in Jackson, Ms.
I just happen to notice on the benifits page that they had list the compensation package on the backoffice.
An it had stated that all managers were to be at minimum salary by july 1st of last year, and this was in like sept. of last year. So me and some others managers were questioning this, and my AGM acted like she did not even know this was even there. Yeah right, I wasn't buying that, she also shoe shoed another manager thinking that she was getting a raise in April when she was suppose to and it was just being bumped up to the minimum. And she had no idea that this was even available to us at the time.
when she found out she ask for a demotion and was told no. That there were no demotions.
The turn over in managment in this area is astronomical, there are 8 units and half the time about 3 are being ran by so called assistant that are on a trial for the GM position and it never happens.
But she turns around when I leave and promotes a waitress, partime shift to the unit manager. "SOUNDS LIKE THE WARM BODY SYNDROME TO ME". But she is surely not making $600.00 a week because she was a insider, you have to be an outsider in order to make good money with that company. You are so right about , it is all about money to them. That is it the all mighty dollar.
Well anyway, I probably shared too much. Get to see such a great sight. "GOOD FOR YOU"
SINCERELY,
LIVING LARGE AT PAPA'S

NPC
Date: 7/11/1998 7:54:24 AM Central Daylight Time
First off I am using fictitious names because I need my job. I am a shift manager in the process of being promoted to assistant at one of NPC's Topeka Ks stores. I agree. PHI was superior in every way. We have to meet a big 2 of 49% but yet they do not want service to suffer or the quality of food to go down. We have to run most nights with a manager, 1 cook, and 1 wait staff (try doing a $1500 night [5-10pm) with that. It is Hell!!! Today we got an Email from Blayne Vaughn saying if any deposits are late (i.e., not posted to the account by noon) the manager of that deposit will be terminated. Is that bullshit or what?
The store manager and I had to cover up $108.00 that we are sure it is the soon to be ex-assistant took trying to set us up. Let me back up to explain this. About 2 months ago the manager at this store took a position in Portland Oregon. Paul and I came to the store. Chris the assistant was pissed because he felt the store should have went to him. He has been doing little things trying to play the crew against us but it backfired in his face. He put in his 2 weeks which will be up July 21. Well, now he is trying to go out with a bang. He has written up 3 people 4 times for the same instance and is demanding they be terminated and Paul refuses to do it. Anyway, Tuesday night Chris came in, walked behind the counter in street clothes, made him and his friends 3 large pizzas then proceeded to get in the cash drawer. He skimmed the drawer and dropped it. We had just slowed down and I know there were 5 -$20 bills and several $10 bills and a few checks in the drawer because I had done a cash count about 45 min earlier (We were $2.00 short.) At closed after the time delay went off and I opened the safe and pulled out the envelope there were no $20's. I immediately got Paul and had him watch me do the count. Sure enough I was $108.00 short for the day. Paul and I covered it and we went to the AGM and basically got an attitude of "He will be gone in 11 days don't worry about it" Now isn't that bull shit.Thank You

pizza hut
Date: 6/28/1998 12:19:56 AM Central Daylight TimeHello..I read your pizza hut page and I would like to add my experience...Where I live here in Nevada we have a pizza buffet in our pizza huts..The last time I went there they only had four pizzas sitting out for the buffet and all the pizzas had the same toppings...Onions and green peppers, even the pasta was garnished with onions..When I brought it to the attention of the people working there I explained that there
should be vairety in the selection of pizzas such as a pepperoni and a sausage or plain cheese. Not all four with onions and peppers...The man then explained to me that I was wrong...He said "yes all have onions and peppers but one also has diced tomatoes"...Hopeless...Thanks for letting me share my experience.....

Capitalist Ferengi
Well, let's see.
NPC is alot like many members of corporate America. . . Capitalist Ferengi, if you know what I mean. It is just that they have gone too far. PHI had its share of BS too, but nothing like what NPC has thrown on us. In the last months leading up to the purchase, PHI had finally realized that they needed more people in the restaurant for it to run efficiently and keep the customers satisfied. NPC runs its restaurants on a skeleton crew (with a few bones missing, namely the HEAD BONE) with little regard for the customer. They would rather scare off half of their customers as long as they are meeting their ludicrous 50% profit margin. NPC has succeeded in dropping a $1 million/yr. store into a very sub-million store because their service sucks, but don't think that has them worried! The equations they use are still bringing more baseline profit into the store than ever before (due in no small part to the implementing of a $1 delivery charge that is never seen by the drivers). So, in essence, it is,
"Sir, the customers are dissatisfied with our services.". . . . .
mgmt - "Are the profits being met?".. . . .
"Yes Sir". . . .
mgmt - "So what is your point?"
NPC has forgotten what they are in business to do. Food service should be just that. . .SERVICE, but yet they don't care about the very customers that they are in business for in the first place.
Does this make sense?
WyldShot

hi, i am (was) the asst. mgr. who wrote you before. I had to leave due to problems (not because of pizza hut). The story i told you was the tip of the iceberg. My mgr constantly broke rules and leaving me to keep his secrets. From cashing $200 personal checks out of the register, to adding time while he wasnt there, to making up lost (stolen money) by discounting or not ringing in food. Employees went from having fun and getting paid to sitting off the clock watching tv, while mgmt waited their tables and took their tips. We had a mgr who would curse us anytime he felt like it, and would get rid of employees he didnt like personally, even though they did a good job. As mgrs we would be told to go along and stick together in case any sh*t got started, which was almost everyday. Our agm always thought everyone was stealing, mostly the shifts, and would never investigate the mgr. Personally i don't blame them if they did take money, because thats the only way you can get paid with npc.

Pizza Hut Canada
Date: 98-05-30 00:58:56 EDTJust wanted to say Hi from Canada and a fellow Pizza Hut worker. We are
currently owned by Tricon, which is probably similar to NPC. But we are
also currently in the midst of being franchised. Actually the man
purchasing are area owns a number of units down in South Dakota and some
other states - just wanted to know if you had heard of him. Joe Montane
- I am not sure of how is spelt as I have only heard the name not seen
it written anywhere.
Life can be up or down here. The management are pretty good but they
get treated like shit from head office and forced to do things that they
don't feel comfortable doing - I should know - I am currently an
assistant manager.
Even though I am in management I feel your page is great! The staff
should have a chance to say their piece. We have yearly crew surveys
right know but everyone is afraid to say what they truly feel cause they
know it will only cause trouble in the long run - either for themselves
or the management.
It just goes to say the old saying is true - They only put up stoplights
after a few people have been killed. The same is true for Pizza Hut -
they are constantly cutting labor to save a buck but the good staff
won't put up with it and will quit and the customers will get tired of
hearing how "we are short handed tonight" or will get too many mistakes
made by newer poorly trained staff and just won't come back. But by the
time Tricon or NPC figures this out it will be too late - they will go
the same way Mother's Pizza did - out of business.Sorry I can't leave my real name - me being in management and all
Just call me
Tabitha

Date: 98-05-27 14:22:43 EDTDamn, I thought I was the only one out there who thought this way! I am currently an assistant manager for an npc pizza hut in kentucky, and everything you say is true! We run on less than a skeleton crew most of the time, and on several occasions, i was the only one running the store between shifts. Imagine being an asst. mgr and waiting 4 tables, making all the orders, answering phones, and doing all management duties too! This sucks big time, but like you, i need a check and job ops in this area are slim. Right now we only have one driver, and he is 49 years old. We constantly have to shut down delivery at 7:30pm on the nights that he can work. I get cussed out 10 times every night because of this, and then have to make up an excuse why we don't have drivers, when the real reason is that a driver scheduled 35 hours a week may only get 20 if they are lucky, due to labor. On peak nights, many times we only have one server who has to handle the dining room. I have to constantly discount tickets and give away free meals because she left out items or screwed up an order trying to hurry. Then at closing, we all work until a predetermined time and then clock out and work another 1-2 hours finishing up off the clock! Only to have the manager come in the next day (who never closes or works past 6pm) to tell us the store looks like sh*t. Currently i am trying to move to a different state and have already had good interviews with good companies who value customers over the bottom line.
